Amerhadi Azmi is..

.. even more jealous at this guy.

Student writes to Steve Jobs, gets free Final Cut Studio 2.

Sometimes Xmas comes earlier and when you less expect it: A Greenwich High School student wrote a letter directly to Mr. Jobs himself asking politely for an student discount on Final Cut Studio 2. Two weeks later, he got way more than he wanted, shipped directly from Cupertino.

Haish.. why haven't I think of that before? So much for the stereotypical faceless capitalist corporations eh?

I'm seriously thinking of asking Steve Jobs and Bill Gates for $100,000 each. I want to go to Bali.

*

Disclaimer:

The guy owns 3 Macs already, including that chunk of a hulk Octocore Mac Pro (Selling for RM10,000), an iMac (around RM7,000) and a MacBook (around RM4,000). So I guess they see that it's okay to send him the Final Cut Studio (selling for RM5,000) since he spent a lot already on Apple hardware.

Still it makes me wonder. If you can afford a Mac Pro why can't you afford the Studio? And what have you been doing with all them 8 cores before Stevie boy here sent you them Christmas goodies?

Now, how about shipping that iMac over here buddy?

Amerhadi Azmi is..

..jealous of everyone else in the world.

Shut up and walk away. Find me a cave and I'll live there.

I don't need to know about your fancy apartment. I don't need to know about your fancy address. I don't need to know about your fancy vacation. I don't need to know about your fancy clothes. I don't need to know about your fancy friends. I don't need to know about your fancy life.

Your fancy words are not making this any better.

I'm not an extra and I refuse to be a footnote. I'm the brilliant sentence that you quote.

So go run around and forget; I won't be around when you're back.

Happy holidays.

If you can choose any superhero power, what would it be?

I for one, would live to manipulate time. Play. Pause. Rewind. Maybe forward a few times. Then rewind back.

Awesome kan?

I like to day dream.. Imagining things.. like what if Seri Kembangan is the capital of Malaysia. What if suddenly I'm crippled. What if war broke out tomorrow. What if I'm rich. What if I'm poor. What if this, what if that..

Sometimes I see this as my form of escapism. Sometimes I see this also as preparation.. you'll never know what'll happen tomorrow. So I guess if I play all those scenes in my mind like some movie, one day if that really happen I can just remember back all that and hopefully know what to do.

Weird I know.. and it'll probably won't work anyway.

I wanna go down the rabbit hole, swallow the blue pill and live life in wonderland for a while. Just remind me to bring along the red pill.. I'll probably need it somewhere down there.

Semester break!

Woohoo!

I've been very very busy the past few weeks with my journals, essays, videos and what not. Really looking forward for some nice and quite time off from all the stress.

*

Last Friday we presented our documentary video to the class and thankfully, the class, the lecturer, Ms. Hazlin and Mr. Baki Zainal loved it. There's a few flaws here and there but overall, it worked. Phewh..

I'm scared of presentations actually. I was literally shaking the whole while waiting for our turn to present. When our video was playing, I couldn't watch it and instead I shoegazed for the whole 15 minutes. Stage fright? I don't know.. maybe. But when the video stopped and the applause kicked in, I was more than relieved. Satisfying indeed knowing that you've entertained people, delivered your message and thinking about how all those sleepless nights are worth. Phewh, phewh, phewh..

Anyway, I plan to upload the video here but since I'm doing a documentary on a real person and that person requested that I take out a few seconds here and there for, I have to honour that request and the upload have to wait a bit.

For my first documentary about the Melaka thing, I don't think I can upload that due to some legal issues that sprung out due to our carelessness and unprofessional conduct. See la, if I'm not doing anything this holiday then I'll reedit them. Again, sorry.

So yeah.. What am I supposed to do until February? Any ideas?

Gamerama

I've stopped playing computer games for quite a few years. I can't remember the last one I played. It was probably XIII, Icewind Dale 2, The Sims 2, GTA4, KotOR 1 & 2 and I can't remember the rest. Seriously. It's that long. Even with the games I mentioned just now, I only played it half way through. Never finished any of 'em.

It was probably the fact that I lack the hardware. Somehoe the Radeon back home was toasted. living me having to rely on just the on board Intel graphics, which of course, can't do much. It might also be because I use a Mac nowadays and there aren't many games for Macs and after the government's crackdown on pirated CDs, it's hard to buy new games.

On top of that, I feel that games these days lack essence. They are more heavy on the graphics side with whatever physics engine and whatnots while the story and gameplay tend to lack. Maybe that's because I dig RPGs. Love 'em. And by RPGs I mean standalone role playing games, not all that Massive Multiplayer whatever it is RPGs that people are crazy over now.

RPG games are my escapism. It's for me to forget for a while who I am and imagine that I'm a righteous paladin, fighting dragons, wild rabbits and at the same time exploring castles and forests while learning to speak Elvish. Not Elvis. Elvish.

What's my favourite RPG? I know kau tak tanya, tapi aku nak bagi tau ni. It's Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. This is probably the best RPG ever. Everrr.

Yea, it's about 10 years old by this year and the graphics will win it no awards by todays standard, but the gameplay is hard to match. This isn't your ordinary hack and slack game like Diablo. Baldur's Gate emphasizes more on adventure and exploration. Sure you can hack and slash your way through it but stick to the dialogue mode and you'll find it so much rewarding.

So yeah, I'm suddenly in mood for retro gaming and I've just secured a copy of this game since my discs at home are already damaged. I only need to get that PC back home up and running again and I'll be off to Amn for the next I don't know for how long, talking to goblins and wild rabbits. Which would be much more fun this time around. Last time I played this game on and AMD K6-2 500Mhz PC. I think 3.2Ghz of Pentium 4 should make this old game run like a rabbit on cocaine.

*

If I ever buy a new PC, or Macs even, I would be very very much want to play this game.

My second love is the Red Alert series.

Excuse the nerdgasm

I want one of these for my birthday.

RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera. Completely modular. Like Legos, you make it be what you want it to be. Choose the brain and build around it.

Shoots from 3K to 28K.

Price? Heh.

$2,500 to $55,000.

Make sure it comes in a green box with blue ribbons.

Thank you!

Quantum of Solace

I just came back from watching James Bond's Quantum of Solace.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before but I would seriously pay extra to go watch a movie at the cinema if there's an option to watch it without subtitles.

I would pay even more to see a movie that is not censored.

Why? Here's the thing. The movie is called the Quantum of Solace. But the point where the bad guy explained what the hell the Quantum is was deemed inappropriate somehow and was cut.

Every thing of it up till the bad guy said, "I've already mentioned to you what the Quantum is, don't kill me", or something along that line.

It's like watching Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets without actually seeing the Chamber or watching Narnia, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe without the wardrobe in it.

That's like, totally not cool kan?

Owh, by the way. Do you know what Quantum of Solace is in Malay?

Ketenangan yang membawa kepada kecelakaan.

On Russian cameras

1-8 November 2008
Serdang, Ampang, Bukit Bintang

*

I'm currently in love with film more than pixels. It's probably one of those flavour of the week thing. I haven't developed the Sensia roll and now I'm in the middle of an expired Elitechrome 100. Probably gonna develop both together. Economically wiser.

Anyway, I am also currently in love with Russian or more appropriately Soviet cameras. Love em though I haven't touched any. It's probably the classic spartan styling of the Iron Curtain in contrast of the more friendly Japanese designs. Hell, it might be that LC-A's halo effect, I don't know..

Cantik kan? Even the names of these cameras sound interesting: Zorki, FED, Lubitel, Zenit.. It's like Charles Manson compared to the Japanese Takeshi Kaneshiro, whoever that is.

I'll probably grab one while my sister is still in Moscow. Her friend bought that still working Zenit EM up there for merely 1000 rubles, roughly around RM 130. A few days back I found one of these in Ampang. The apek is selling it for RM 780. Isn't capitalism sweet?

So, what next? As silly as it might sound, I'll probably venture into processing my own films next. Been reading a lot about the process and I do think it's feasible albeit a tad on the expensive side. At least once la, I want to experience that before its gone for good.

 So yeah...

Chemistry

I saw this number while I was browsing just now and I smiled.

6.02*10^23

Pemalar Avogadro.

Until now I don't know what it means and what it is used for.

The same goes for mol.

What's the relationship between the two of them?

It's amazing how little I know of Chemistry after studying it for 2 years.

Did I study even study it?

Okay, I meant to say 2 years of going to Chemistry class. There.

I don't know why.. maybe I'm just not interested about it. There's some part of me wanting to say that by the time I wanted to know what it was, it was already too late. But that doesn't make sense since the people that slacked with me in 2004 did well for Chemistry in 2005.

So yeah, I guess I was lazy.

Still, I want to dedicate a few thoughts of my failure to understand Chemistry to my teachers. Yes, rude I know but I feel that they could do better.

H: Cikgu, mol tu ape?
S: Mol tuh.. mol tu mol la.. Macam mane lagi saye nak terangkan kat awak?

Well, I don't know.. I love analogies, I'm sure that could help..

That's the thing that I hate about chemistry. It's something I can't imagine. Something I can't construct a visual reference with in my mind. The only thing I can imagine are the molecules banging each other.. boing boing boing.. I understood Physics because I can imagine Physics. I understood Biology because I can imagine Biology.

Maybe I didn't know enough of Chemistry to imagine about it.

Oh well.. kambing dah keluar kandang, aku baru bangun tidur. Tak ada guna. Kereta api dah pergi aku baru nak beli tiket. Tak ada guna. Kapal dah karam aku baru nak belajar berenang. Tak ada guna.

Tapi untuk kau belum lagi.

It's okay if you want to know what 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1080i, 2K, 4K, PAL, SECAM and NTSC means. You'll have time for those..

Sekarang ni, bukak buku Pelangi, bagi faham Pemalar Avogadro dulu. Bagi faham mol dulu. Lepas kau dah reti semua tu kau datang cari aku, apa kau nak tau aku boleh ajar.

Okay?

Dah terlambat sikit, tapi tak apa. Good luck SPM.

p/s: A fellow Old Boy once said this to me: SPM tu senang. Menyesal aku belajar. Heh..

Senses

I went to get myself some interesting films yesterday and got myself a roll of Fujichrome Sensia 200 to use with Arif's LC-A. I was looking for a Velvia actually but when I got back and googled up Sensia, I got excited. I can't wait to get this roll processed.

Here's a few sample I found from the web of people using Sensia on LC-A.

Photos courtesy of Daniel Go. Click here to see more.

Yeah, it's kind of weird kan? While everyone else is talking about megapixels, HDRs and all things digital.. here I am, getting excited about some celluloid.

Oh well.. I want to at least experience the joy of films while they are still here. I don't want to miss out like with them polaroids. I only got excited about them after the factory stopped producing the films. A few months back a pack of 10 sheets cost RM45. Now, I dare you to find any polaroid left in KL. (By the way.. Anyone who still want to at least mimic the polaroid experience might want to try the Fuji Instax. Filem banyak lagi)

So yeah, I was chatting with the shop owner and from what he's saying these films are also counting down their days. I'm guessing that the professional films to go first.. the Velvia, Astia, Sensia, Provia. After that, the consumer ones will follow suit. It won't happen overnight, but it will eventually. It happen to everything okay?.. Don't expect jpeg to last forever too.

*

Here's some photo lingo.

When discussing about film, the speed is determined by the ISO: 50, 100, 200 etc. Most people know that. An ISO100 film requires half the light to produce an image an ISO50 film would need and so on.

But how do you differentiate the speed of lenses? Between a 50mm f1.8 and a 18-55mm f3.5, which one is faster?

In lens, you look at the aperture to determine how fast a lens is. A smaller number means the bigger the aperture opens so the bigger the aperture opens, the faster the lens is.

So since in the 50mm f1.8 the aperture opens bigger than the 18-55mm f3.5, the 50mm f1.8 is the faster lens.

Easy kan? My dad told me before to always listen to conversation, even the ones you know nothing about. All you have to do is sit down, listen and remember the points. So next time when you find yourself in the same topic, mention those things you remember and voila! You are conversing.

Of course, it is very recommended to go back home and research on the things you listened to.. you know, to understand it more and maybe you can avoid the trouble of misquoting. Heh.. been there. The topic was motorcycles.. Epic fail.

I've rarely joined any conversation about motorbikes again after that. Even more rarely than football I think..

*

I just hope hope hope that the LC-A doesn't screw up this time. Please please please don't..
