When you fear things that are not to be feared, you're giving it power that it doesn't have.
It's not something of our religion, thus to us it is but a piece of carved stone.
Saying that it can make us stupid is like saying that the piece of stone is somehow powerful, which if I'm not mistaken is what we call khurafat.

Somehow I think it is our elderly folks that constantly feed us with racist notion. A foolproof formula since you consider the fact that we were brought up to respect our elders and that they know best since they makan garam dulu.
Still, there's maybe a thing behind it. The thing here is respect, not fear. Maybe it can be quite disrespectful to stare at the shrine. Orang dulu-dulu kan macam-macam excuse diorang buat to forbid us from doing something, macam jangan duduk atas bantal, nanti bisul. The saying implies fear but the real reason is respect that is to say that the pillow is for your head, respect it by not putting your butt on it. Maybe the notion jangan tengok nanti bodoh came about from the same manner.

No offense to everyone elderly and everyone Buddhist. I love you all still.
